In the 1950s, Oberman modernized Gelderland's traditional collection by using steel, modern suspension systems, and furniture with removable upholstery. These innovations made the furniture more durable and accessible to a wide audience. Through collaborations with external designers such as Rob Parry and later Jan des Bouvrie, Gelderland grew into a leading brand in the Dutch furniture industry. Des Bouvrie's sleek, contemporary designs, such as the famous 430 sofa, gave the brand a fresh and innovative look and made it popular with a broad audience.
Thanks to Oberman's progressive vision and strategic collaborations, Meubelfabriek Gelderland managed to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern design, a legacy that continues to live on to this day.
by Koene Oberman
"A piece of furniture should not only be beautiful, it should also withstand life itself – practical, durable, and made with love."
Koene Oberman designed the original 2041 Elzerd armchair in 1956 as a showcase of modern Dutch design. With his keen eye for form and functionality, he created a chair that stood out with its geometric lines. The Elzerd embodied Oberman's vision of timeless furniture design: sleek, honest, and comfortable. Over half a century later, this iconic model forms the basis for a contemporary reissue, where his original design philosophy is still recognizable.
