KOENE OBERMAN

Koene Oberman is best known as the founder of Meubelfabriek Gelderland. As a furniture manufacturer, he was responsible for a number of remarkable designs. His iconic Elzerd armchair is part of the furniture collection of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and is considered a prime example of modern Dutch furniture design.

Oberman was a pioneer in the serial production of furniture in Culemborg, a city with a long tradition of artisanal furniture making. Shortly after World War II, he set his sights on international growth. He began exporting his own collection and introduced the production of furniture by renowned Danish designers, such as Ib Kofod-Larsen. His marriage to a Danish woman was reflected in his style: many of his designs were clearly inspired by the early work of Hans Wegner and Børge Mogensen, with a strong focus on functionality, simplicity, and artisanal craftsmanship.

In the 1950s, Oberman modernized Gelderland's traditional collection by using steel, modern suspension systems, and furniture with removable upholstery. These innovations made the furniture more durable and accessible to a wide audience. Through collaborations with external designers such as Rob Parry and later Jan des Bouvrie, Gelderland grew into a leading brand in the Dutch furniture industry. Des Bouvrie's sleek, contemporary designs, such as the famous 430 sofa, gave the brand a fresh and innovative look and made it popular with a broad audience.

Thanks to Oberman's progressive vision and strategic collaborations, Meubelfabriek Gelderland managed to bridge the gap between traditional craftsmanship and modern design, a legacy that continues to live on to this day.

2041 Elzerd armchair

"A piece of furniture should not only be beautiful, it should also withstand life itself – practical, durable, and made with love."

KOENE OBERMAN X GELDERLAND

Koene Oberman designed the original 2041 Elzerd armchair in 1956 as a showcase of modern Dutch design. With his keen eye for form and functionality, he created a chair that stood out with its geometric lines. The Elzerd embodied Oberman's vision of timeless furniture design: sleek, honest, and comfortable. Over half a century later, this iconic model forms the basis for a contemporary reissue, where his original design philosophy is still recognizable.
